Top 6 teams are tied at 4-3 after pool play.

Considering just the games from those 6 teams, here's the win/loss records (which is the way the upa breaks the ties (rule 2).

rank
by w/l team w/l
1-3 Navy 3 - 2
1-3 Green 3 - 2
1-3 Silver 3 - 2
4-6 White 2 - 3
4-6 Black 2 - 3
4-6 Red 2 - 3

So there are 2 groups: Navy, Green and Silver are in a tie for 1st, 2nd and 3rd and White, Black and Red are in a tie for 4th, 5th and 6th.

Apply tie break rules to those two groups.

In the Navy, Green, Silver group:Navy beat Green and Silver. Green beat silver. So Navy is 2-0, Green is 1-1 and Silver is 0-2.

In the White, Black and Red group: White beat Red and Black, Black beat Red. So White is 2-0, Black is 1-1 and Red is 0-2.

After applying the tie break rules, the 6 way tie is broken this way:

1 Navy 3 - 2
2 Green 3 - 2
3 Silver 3 - 2
4 White 2 - 3
5 Black 2 - 3
6 Red 2 - 3
That's how the top 6 teams will be seeded for playoffs.

A new The Sour Age (March 12) is up along with more predictions from Show Killer (also March 12).

Captains report from March 15th

                       Red vs. Navy

Navy was barely able to scrape together 7 players at the start
of the game, and two of these were sick. Redrum took advantage
of Navy's weakened squad by winning the half 7-2, mainly through
patient handing in the wind. With the score 6-2, the teams played
an ill-fated point in which Tom Dickinson of Navy injured his
shoulder on a layout bid, and then Allison Zisser of Red rolled
her ankle. Justin Smith showed up after halftime for Navy, but it
was too little, too late to change the outcome: 13-8 Red
 --K. Keating, captain of Red
(EDITORS NOTE: the score of the Red-Navy game is disputed)

                        Red vs. Green

This game was eerily similar to the Red/Navy contest: Green
started shorthanded, with only six players, Red took the half
7-2, and then Green picked up a player (Tim Sannes) during
halftime. Once again this was not enough to prevent Red from
prevailing 13-8. Unfortunately another parallel with the
Red/Navy game was that a Red player, in this case Katelyn
Cobelens, had to leave the game due to an injury. This left
Erica Zuhr as the only woman left standing on Redrum.
 --K. Keating, captain of Red

Game 1: 11-12 - Lost

The impact for the Dead Presidents without Kyle was felt from the start as
the Tide took the early 2-0 lead. Despite coming very close to overcoming
the deficiet before half the Tide was able to capitalize on a few mistakes
from White and take half 7-4. From there it seemed like the turnovers
stopped for White and started to plague the Tide. On Universe point Black
had a shot to punch it in but with a turnover and the wind captain Mike was
able to catch the winning score. Final 11-12 White.

Game 2: 7-3 then Navy forfiet at half... How do we score this?

Similar to the Tides first game they started off hot and were able to keep
the pressure on Navy the whole first half. During half time Navy forfieted
due to several players suffering illnesses similar to sea sickness... The
Tide was too strong. Final 7-3 Tide.

--Phil, captain of Black

####################################################################

Green was down 6 players today so we struggled for people. We only had
enough for six. None-the-less I was proud of the team. Lots of newer
players got good experience, and they remained upbeat despite the
challenges. I would like to thank the Fighter Pilots for only matching
our sixes. I would like to nomintae 2 MVP's (1 male and 1 female),
those being Theron and Nicole. Both played well.

--Ash, subing for Marta, captain of Green

####################################################################

1st game: Royal 13 - Silver 6

Royal MVP: Nick/Nathan

Write up:

The game started pretty even with both teams having around the same
number of players. Silver made a few mistakes in the first half and
Royal took half by a few points. The wind obviously affected Silver's
play more so than Royal. The second half Royal played pretty solid
while Silver kept their mistakes coming, and Royal pulled away at the
end scoring at least 4 points straight. Unremarkable game other than
Royal was the better team today with Nathan putting up big throws and
Nick making big grabs. 2nd game: Silver 13 - White 11

White MVP: Henry/Leathers

Write up:

With White playing a significantly longer 1st game, fatigue obviously
played a big factor in the beginnning of the game. Even with pulling
to start, Silver showed more energy and jumped out to a 4-2 lead. But
white rallied back to tie with several downwind hucks connecting to
Lyle and Greathouse, and a few mistakes by Silver against the zone.
Silver pulled at 6-6 and took advantage of mistakes by White to break
and take half! It was mostly an upwind-downwind game with few breaks
upwind. 2 points down, White rallied again to tie and then went up 1
to 9-8. The teams traded downwind scores and everyone was getting
extremely tired by that point. Jia droped a fast, downwind pull by
Leathers; as well as multiple drops by Silver on hammer attempts.
White losing Andrew in the middle of the 2nd half didn't help; several
passed were dropped in the endzone = more running...! At that point
Silver had decent match ups even with 3 strong players down on this
day. At 11-11, Silver called their first timeout to collect
themselves. Knowing that getting an upwind break at this point of the
game is going to make the game in all likelyhood, Silver made its last
push. It only took one turnover from White, Doug got it to Allen, who
put up a big blady flick upwind to Jia running all alone down field.
An easy pass to Michael put Silver up 12-11 pulling, downwind. A big
pull put White to start 3 yards from the back of the endzone, and
Silver put on the pressure to force a and did not connect. Zone
again, forcing another floaty pass and turnover. This time Silver took
its time to swing the disc and an easy score on the reak side put an
end to a long day of league ultimate. A strong howing by both teams
while down several key players.

-- Jia, captain of Silver

####################################################################

Dead Presidents over the Black Tide, 12-11

The wind was a factor in this game, and the Presidents started off on
their heels after coughing up the disc on their goal line on the first
pull. Throughout the first half, the Tide dominated with great play by
Show, Deanna and the rest of the Black crew. At half, it looked like
all was lost with the tide taking it 7-4 (or 3?). In the 2nd though,
the Presidents rallied and broke the zone time and time again, and
then clamped down hard with a tight Z of their own. White finally
took the lead at the 21st point, but Black answered with a downwind
score to force Universe. White then received the pull and punched the
disc in.

Loose Change over the Dead Presidents, 13-11

In this second game, White started off strong, but fatigue was
absolutely a factor, particularly since both Andrew and Karin had to
bail at about half time. Still, White played well against the Change,
and was able to take the lead late in the game. Unfortunately though,
my guys were tired, and Jia played great (notwithstanding the dropped
pull), as did Alan and the rest of the Silver gang. At 11-11, White
had a costly turn that resulted in a Silver score. After that, White
received the disc and had to go upwind, and just couldn't do it- they
coughed up the plate, and Silver converted.

--Mike, captain of White

####################################################################

Game 1: Royal-13, Silver-6
Game 2: Royal-13, Gold-7

The first game against Silver started out strong, with the teams
going point-for-point. Zone defense was a popular choice
considering the strong wind. Royal was able to take the half and
use their momentum to pull forward during the second half.
Silver's experienced handlers made some drops when faced with
Royal's cup. Communication and patience finally paid off for
Royal, only allowing Silver to score 1 point in the second half.
Royal took the win 13-6, flushing away their Loose Change.

The second game against Gold started very similarly to the first
game of the day, with both Gold and Royal trading off points for a
while. Man defense was a successful choice for Royal, with Nick's
aerials adding to the fun. Lack in communication and a small
dispute shook up the Gold team, who were making some shaky passes
in the second half. Royal capitalized on this, and after tasting a
win in the first game, there was no stopping them. Royal let the
yellow mellow and took the win 13-7.
-- Brianna, captain of Royal

Captains reports from Feb. 22nd

                Redrum vs. Black Tide

After fielding a squad of 12 players last Sunday, Redrum
could only scape up 6 for their game against the Black
Tide (who graciously agreed to play 6 on 6). The game
started out close, but after Red tied it at 3-3 Black
opened up a 7-3 lead. Red made a modest comeback, but
Black took the half 8-5. The second half followed the
same pattern: At first the teams traded points, then
Black jumped to a 14-9 lead. Red made a comeback,
but it was too little, too late, as Black won 15-12.
In the end, Red's lack of subs meant that their comebacks
were doomed, since their players just ran out of energy,
Strong crosswinds made for a turnover-filled game. Red,
unfortunately, made a lot of their turns close to the
goal line, leading to some easy scores for Black.

-Kevin, Captain of Redrum

              ###################################

It was a good thing I wasn't a guest picker this week for this game because
I would have been wrong. Looking at the two rosters it would seem that Red
Rum would have the dominent edge, but as it turned out only 6 players showed
up for Red while the Tide was near full strength. Wanting the advantage I
looked to play up a man, but the women Tide soon convinced that playing fair
and matching 6's would make us feel better... and it actually did. So on a
semi windy day with no K-swiss Red was down to 2 handlers Kink and Coleman
and things started by trading points for a while, but with no subs Red ran
out of Rum towards the middle of the first half and the Tide took the half
8-6. Second half the Tide threw a 2 man cup zone that proved effective when
Red was going up wind and pushed the lead to 11-8. A nice Coleman to Maher
strike kept it close, but in the end Red would succumb to the Tides ever
changing waves. 15-12 Final Black Tide.

-Phil, Captain of Black

#########################################################################

This game looked like it was going to be a blow out, with the Dead
Presidents jumping to a 5-1 lead. Royal, though, does have some
players, and so they managed to battle back and narrow the gap. At
half, was it 8-6, the Dead Presidents. After that, it was a white
out. The Flush had serious problems handling in that confusing,
swirling wind, while the Presidents were able to convert by making
fewer mistakes. Really, the key was handling. Royal just didn't have
enough. Plays of note: a pull from Nathan that landed on his own
brick after traveling 90 yards, a foot-block by Henry, great handling
by Kendra, and good zone by both teams. When it was all said and
done, The Dead Presidents cruised in Air Force One. Final: 15-7 (I think!).

-Mike, Captain of the Dead Presidents (White)

#########################################################################

Due to circumstances beyond anyone's control, Loose Change was only able to
field a team of 5. Silver thought about forfeiting for a moment but decided
to make Dirty Martini earn the victory, so they fielded their 5 versus
Green's 6. Despite being a man down, LC was able to score the first point.
Silver could actually win this thing, and they played that way for a short
while, trading points. Eventually the wheels began to come off, and Green
took half 8-4. LC was approached about ending the game and splitting into
two equal teams for a fun scrimmage, but Silver responded with "We are going
to win this game."

The second half did not start off much better, and LC was eventually down
10-5. This is when the run began. With the help of Silver MVP Lisa, who
scored half the points for LC, the score was soon (I don't know if soon is
appropriate) 10-9. Dirty Martini seemed to be getting frustrated, but
pulled it together and points were traded for the rest of the game.
Eventually the good guys fell 13-15. Still a loss, but not bad for being a
man, sorry person, down for the game.

Captains Game Report

             Redrum vs. Dead Presidents

Red fell behind 2-0 before speed demons Coleman Hoover
and Chris Maher arrived. After that the teams basically
traded points--White's lead was never more than 3 or less
than 1. White took the half 8-6 and the game 15-13.

-Kevin, Captain of Red

##############################################################

Dead Presidents v. Redrum

This was an extremely hard fought game, with the Presidents gaining
the early lead, and then trying to hold on for the ride. True to
form, the Reds went to the huck early and often, and the Dead
Presidents responded by doing the same. Interestingly, both teams
used a wide variety of defenses, including the zone, man, 6-under, the
trap, and of course, the old
poach-off-your-man-and-try-not-to-get-beat-deep. After taking half,
8-6, the Presidents picked up a couple of more points, and then Redrum
came charging back. Probably, the most crucial point was the 26th
point (score 13-12, DP): Both teams turned the disc repeatedly,
before Henry finally got a footblock on the goal line, giving the
Presidents some breathing room, and eventually allowing them to ice
it. I would say that just about the entire Red squad played great,
including Captain Keating. For the Presidents, Id say that Leathers
and Michelle were both of our stand-out players. Final score: 15-13,
Dead Presidents.

-Mike, Captain of White

##############################################################

With no Colin or Kyle this week for the Tide it looked like the
Fighter Pilots might come out with guns blaring. The Pilots looked
shell shocked the first few points and let the Tide out to an ealry
3-1 lead. The Pilots led by TJ then came back with their clam defense
that shut down the Tide's movement and came way back to take half 8-6
and ending on a 5-0 run. After losing such a commanding lead, the
Tide would look to Adam to call a line to get us out of the funk.
Breaking the zone the Tide made it 7-8, and then the longest point
ever was played and when the time out was called I told the team this
was the point that would make the difference in the game. The Tide
finally punched it in to tie it at 8's and never looked back going up
11-8 then firmly applying the **Jay Blackdar stratagm. Good game
Gold. Final score 15-11 Black Tide!

**If you have the lead, defense is completely unnecessary. On offense,
however, you must score.

-Phil, Captain of Black

Silver vs. Navy write up

With most of the girls out, both teams only had one girl, but Silver
only managed a savage squad against Navy's 9. Silver had a decent
crew and didn't play that poorly, but Navy had an amazing, virually
mistake free game, leading to its total domination on this Sunday! As
I recall, Navy had maybe zero or one turnover in the entire first
half. With Navy playing 7 guys on offense, Silver was forced to go
zone most of the game. Navy has excellent handlers and the whole team
was solid in throwing and catching. So in a no wind (no win, really)
situation, the zone got scored on every point. Silver's offense was
moving, but at times relying only on tall Bill's endzone play. The
second half didn't fair much better, even with taking full advantage
of time outs. A dropped pull at 13-6 pretty much finished off the
day. Congrats to Navy for a fine game.

-Jia, Captain of Silver

##############################################################

Tagline: The Fighter Pilots took the field today with no doubt
that they would come out the victors. That attitude almost cost
them the game.

Preface: You deserve every pun.

It was clear that the FP's were on autopilot during the first few
points. In fact, they didn't manage to complete a pass--repeat:
not one completion--until the fourth point of the game. Before
long, the Black Tide was up 6-3 and receiving the pull. The FP's,
it seemed, had crashed and burned. Then, suddenly, the tide began
to ebb.
The Pilots decided then and there that they weren't going down
without a fight. Ready to tighten up and start getting serious,
they pulled the disc and clamped down a tight zone defense. The
Black Tide struggled as the Fighter Pilots found their groove, and
gold went into half blazing: 8-6.
Halftime was lighthearted on the Fighter Pilot sideline. They'd
struggled to get their footing, but once they stopped spinning
their tires, the FP's were poised to soar to victory. But would
it really be that easy?...

No, it wouldn't. The tide had changed once again. The floodgates
open, Black Tide went up with a quick 3 points to start the half.
The Fighter Pilot's wouldn't go down easily, however, and the
fight dragged on. In fact, nearly every other league player had
left the fields long before the final point of this game was
scored. Anti-climactically, Black Tide won 15-?.

Epilogue: I didn't used to believe in the curse of the
Gainesville League Gold Teams that I keep hearing about... but
after this game, I think that might be the only reasonable
explanation. The FP's have been plagued with injuries from Week
One, two of their original women have mysteriously disappeared,
and scarcely half of their men show up healthy enough to play (if
they show up at all) week in and week out. Can we get some
official stats for this curse? Historical fact or superstitious
excuse?

-TJ, Captain of Yellow

Predictions and Huck Contest

Jack Skunk latest edition of The Sour Age and Jeckyl is a guest predictor this week.

Huck contest from 1:30pm to 2pm this Sunday. Players get 2 hucks for free. After that it's $1 for 2 more attempts (money goes to TJ and associates). Whoever has the best huck wins a disc (best in terms of putting the O in the worst starting position or as judged by TJ). Float time is ignored and final "tap in" location is what counts. There are at least 2 divisions, open and womens. Each division has a backhand winner, a forehand winner and a hammer winner (winners get a disc, presented at the all star game (Marta rule)). TJ and associates will also be selling discs.

Next League Game - Feb. 15th

Sunday will be a single header because FUEL is playing at a tournament this weekend. Good luck FUEL!

Jack Skunk wrote another The Sour Age article.

Captains writeups from Feb. 15th

Round 1 Games, Sunday February 8, 2009

#####################################################################
Redrum (Red) vs. Loose Change (Silver)

Red came out sluggish and allowed Silver to open up an early lead of
4-1. Red then got it together and reeled of 5 straight points. They
hung on to win the half 7-6. Soft cap was called early in the second
half, making it a game to 10. Red got a lead of 9-7, then Silver tied
at 9-9, setting up universe point. Red took the pull and worked the
disc to Silver's goal line. Red then called time out, which was a bad
move since time cap had been called. So Silver got the turnover.
They marched the disc down the field and scored for the 10-9 victory.

-Kevin, Captain of Redrum

#####################################################################

Dead Presidents (White) v. Fighter Pilots (Gold)

The two teams traded points, break for break, to 3 all. The Fighter
Pilots then suffered some engine failure (flock of birds I believe)
and surrendered four in a row, with the Presidents mixing the defense
up with both man and zone. After the half, the Pilots came fighting
back with great handling by both Carlo and Spencer. The Dead
Presidents, though, were finally able to stop the bleeding. From my
perspective, Leathers and Henry played great offense, and Pilgrim got
a nice, crucial layout D. Final: 11-7 (or 6). I forgot.

-Mike, Captain of the Dead Presidents

#####################################################################

Black Tide (Black) vs. Royal Flush (Royal)

In Brianna's first attempt in taking a Showkiller squad down she found
it wasn't so easy. However, in her defense she was missing a key
factor with Future gone for the weekend, and with Nathan on the field
anything is possible. The game started out with the Tide taking
advantage of Royals turns but then Nathan throws a huck that connects
deep for the score to keep the Tide in check. Scott "the hitman"
Huffard proceeded to clothe line Brianna which further hurt the depth
of Royal, and the Tide with a full squad was able to close the deal
and get the win. Royal got Flushed 13-6.

-Phil, Captain of the Black Tide

#####################################################################

Dirty Martini (Green) vs. Mars Attacks! (Navy)

In the game against Navy, we came out a bit flat, although we were
point for point, our offense was not flowing as usual. Although we
were able to send our girls deep and have them score a few
times, we were having difficulties scoring on the goal
line! Navy had some awesome long throws and amazing
catches. They took the half at 7 -6. We played until it
was universe point 8-8 game to 9! We had it on the goal line twice
for the game, but couldn't punch it in... Ben sent a long backhand
to Ryan for the score and we lost 8 - 9...sniff.

-Marta, Captain of Dirty Martini

#####################################################################

Mars Attacks! (Navy) vs. Dirty Martini (Green)

Following the inspiration of their muse Bam-Bam, the team wearing navy named
themselves Flintstones before playing the green team. The Flintstones went
down early, but after some key D's by cavemen Tom and Ryan Scott, the modern
stone age family pulled themselves within one when the cap went on. During
universe point, a yabba dabba do time was had by all but Justin, who had to
leave the game with a split eyebrow that resulted in five stitches. His
replacement player, Ben, hucked the winning score while all of Bedrock
celebrated.

-Tiffany, Captain of Mars Attacks!

#####################################################################
Round 2 Games, Sunday February 8, 2009
#####################################################################

Redrum (Red) vs. Fighter Pilots (Gold)

Playing its second game without Huckmeister Kevin Switzer, Red got an
early lead which they nursed to a 7-5 advantage at the half. Red
stayed ahead in the second half, and led 10-7 at the cap. Once again
a player called time out after the cap, but this time Red was the
beneficiary rather than the victim. The final score was 12-9 Red.
Both teams seemed a bit tired out after playing for several hours in
the bright sun. Gold had the additional handicap of having several
key players (TJ, Carlo) nursing injuries.

#####################################################################

Dirty Martini (Green) v. Dead Presidents (White)

In the game against white - my basic goal was to give Greathouse
and Martinez a hard time because I could :) and it 's becoming one
of my favorite things to do :) We also wanted to play better
than we played against Navy!! So we did. Leathers had some
nice long throws (though I wish I had seen some more blades to the
ground!) and Martinez had a great lay-out D and the score...but we had
some really good defense from Dan R, Jacki, Jonathan and of course,
Ashton! (Who I think Pilgrim still is talking about it.) which
earned us the win. :) Fun game!

-Marta, Catpain of Dirty Martini

Dirty Martini (Green) v. Dead Presidents (White)
Ok, I admit it: I liked the "stop Greathouse!" cheer. Other than
that, this game was a debacle for the Presidents. Think Buchanan,
Harding, Hoover, and Nixon (AFTER Watergate). The Dirty Martinis
played great defense, with Brandon, Tim and Ashton all leading the
way. If the Presidents could throw into tight coverage for the turn,
they did, while Nicole and Jaki were unstoppable. The Czar did get a
nice layout D against Ashton, and then he scored. Bookend Martinez!
But yeah, White lost big to the better team. No worries, though.
Like a federal appointment made in the closing days of an
administration, we're not going anywhere until at least the playoffs.
Final: 11-6, Green.
-Mike, Captain of the Dead Presidents

#####################################################################

Black Tide (Black) vs. Loose Change (Silver)

Despite coming off a win the Tide came out in this game sluggish
committing turn after turn until they were down 3-0 then they woke up
and started playing. We traded points for a while and the Jai
Palmer connection was working as Silver took half 7-3. From there
the Tide scored the first 2 points of the second half which made it
7-5, but then Cara and Mountain for the Tide had to leave. We
continued to fight and fight hard getting it to 9-8 game to 10 but
Silver worked our zone and scored with a hammer to Bill. 10-8
Loose Change Final.

-Phil, Captain of the Black Tide

#####################################################################

Mars Attacks! (Navy) vs. Royal Flush (Royal Blue)

In tribute to Justin, who had to head to the emergency room for stitches
before our second game, the team wearing navy renamed themselves Scarface
for the game against royal. Unfortunately, our new moniker wasn't tough
enough to match Cathy Marshall, who made us say hello to her little friend,
the yo mamma cut, as she streaked up the line like machine gun fire. Even
though Scarface lost in the end, we know that all we have in this world is
our marks and our word, and we don't break them for no one.
