Gainesville Ultimate Winter League

Show Killer - Week1

Hope everyone had a good first week of league- if not, maybe you
should talk to Pretty Boy Floyd with the high socks. Rumor has it that
he knows all about being a team player and having a good time- Well,
maybe not.

Just to remind you all, those early games do count. Winning now puts
you in the top bracket, while losers get to roll around in the muck.
The "Fighting Puyana" strategy of resting up their "A" players at this
point is probably not that bright - but then again, what do I know?
They cruised in Fall League. Like the NBA, maybe Winter League
doesn’t really start until April.

Weather: Perfect conditions, 75 degrees with an occasional breeze
from the south

2 PM Games

Field 1: Team Negative Kink vs. The Fighting Puyanas

With the trophy from Fall League already under their belt, the
Fighting Puyanas were looking for an easy repeat as League champions.
The road got bumpy, however, as Team Kink went up big at the start
with Mike, Kink, and Alan firing on all cylinders. At 10-5, the
Puyanas decided to make their move with a last chance rally, led by
Henry and Marta (who was late!) to close within 2. Could wild-eyed
Mike M., John D or Ponz help save the day? In a word: No. With soft
cap called, it became a game to 11, and not even Pretty Boy could save
the Puyanas from getting negatively kinked. Final: Team Kink, 11-8.

Field 2: Team Ted/Jill vs. The Bike Clan

Let the controversy of Winter League begin! Team Ted/Jill didn’t have
any women show, and according to the rules (as decreed by the mighty
Czar) this is a forfeit. The Czar, however, failed to mention this to
the captains, so this oversight by T/J was allowed to slide like a
piece of uncooked pasta slipping down the wall. To compensate, T/J
played down a player. Fresh off his World Beach Title, the legendary
TK showed off his handling skills with a nice score to Patrick. Where
was Captain Hollywood? Captain Hollywood! We need you. Oh
well. Whatever. The chain came off the Bike Clan.
 Final: 10–4, Team T/J.

Field 3: Team Swiss/Brandon vs. Team Stuart (Yada Yada Yada)

Team Swiss/Brandon is the non-conformist in league, in that they run a
very disciplined and tight offensive: if you can advance the disc, do
it. If not, swing or dump and work the disc methodically; the keys
are patience and precision—oh wait, my bad—that’s what they’d do in
Bizarro World. In this World, Team Swiss hucks like rabbits on
Viagra. To counter this, Y-cubed zoned, and with strong play from
both Huseyin and Will, YYY took the half, 7-6. Like ravaging beasts,
Team Switzer came racing back with Southpaw Tim hitting KS to steal
the lead. After that, cap was called, and Team Yada Yada Yada went
Nada Nada Nada in the second half. Final: 10-7, Team Neutrality.

3:30 PM

Field 1: Team Swiss (1-0) vs The BC (0-1)

The Bike Clan was looking to regroup after that first game debacle,
with an early Major Payne to Ashton huck. Team Swiss, though,
answered as they continued to play their efficient style of offense,
thanks to Alex, Denyce, and Jason who all know how to cut. At 12-11,
the Bike Clan received the disc and made a short throw to a newer
player-but a veteran sideline call (by Team Swiss) ruled him out- and
they were TOTALLY unbiased. And then, of course, Team Swiss moved the
disc down the field, scored and won the game. Final: 13-11, Team
K-Swiss.

Field 2: Team Stuart (0-1) vs Team Negative Kink (1-0)

After being shut out the second half in the first game, Team Stuart
came out with a very aggressive zone, going into half up by six. In
the second, Team Kink played better, with excellent play from Scott,
Wendy and Jasun all stepping up. A goal line turn, though, would be
the end of that, tangling up the kinks. Final: 13-5, Team YYY.

Field 3: Team Ted / Jill (1-0) vs The Fighting Puyanas (0-1)

The Fighting Puyanas -still smarting from the upset by lowly Kink- had
to cowboy up to face the monster T/J team. The legendary T "I haven’t
lost in three months" K, was ready to open up his can of *****-***.
The Fighting Puyanas, though, were looking to break the streak, but a
strong D gave T/J a nice lead. A final score from Fall League MVP
Miguel then sealed the deal, allowing TK’s streak to live on. Final:
13-9, Team T/J.

Thanks to all those who emailed me this week (Showkiller@pwuc.com).
Here are a couple of emails.

     Dear Showkiller,

Where can I go to learn how to improve my play? I sometimes
feel like I am getting in the way on the field.

     Thanks,
     Dazed and Confused

Well Dazed, here is what you do, and it’s fairly simple:

1.Make sure you catch the disc.
2.Make throws that you’re comfortable with.
3.Clear to the middle of the field.

If you do those three things, you’ll be just fine.

     Dear SK:

Is it within the spirit of the game for a partisan sideline
call to be made against a newer player with game point on the
     line? Just wondering.

Singed: Spirit of the Game? Ha! It’s a Myth!

Dear Spirit: No, but it happens.

That’s a wrap. I’ll see you next week.
