Show Killer - Final Article

In a letter to a French scientist named Jean-Baptist Leroy, Benjamin
Franklin remarked that "in this world nothing can be said to be
certain, except death and taxes." Despite the weather, another thing
was certain for Sunday, and that was the finale of Winter League 08.
We won't hang Benjamin Franklin for not realizing that Ultimate would
be the next big thing a couple of centuries later. I mean- like duh!
What else would we be doing?

So the brackets were set, the beer was chillin, and the pizza was on
the way.

Weather: On again off again Rain 73 degrees with an occasional
breeze.

B Bracket Semi's

#6 Queens (2-6) vs. #4 Rooks Bike Gang (4-4)

Could we have another Bikes vs Pawns game in the B finals?
Interestingly enough, with no Chloe the Bikes recruited a couple of
girls to play who weren't in the league. The Czar though, determined
before the first pull that they would forfeit, but the game would be
played. Was the fate already determined? Let's see: Yes. The Queens
came out with a chip on their shoulder for being the #6 seed. Despite
no Marta or Tim Darnell, Red took the early lead, 7-2. In the second
half, the Bikes rallied with a nice D by Bryant and came to within
3. Simon and John (of Red), helped give the edge back to the Queens,
allowing them to finish the rout. Sorry- but Bikes rust in the rain.
Final 13-5 Queens.

#3 Royal Knights (4-4) vs #5 Pawns YYY (4-4)

With the Bikes out, the Pawns were looking to do their part to make it
into the B Finals. Only thing in their way was 7 Royally pissed off
Knights due to an early injury to Alan, thanks to Showkiller. Yeah I
did it- so what? The game started out trading points, and then the
Pawns got a break and went up by 1 with a nice D from the Future. The
Knights came back with a Callahan from the Able Lieutenant himself.
Pawns took half 7-5 but the Knights with Jai to Wendy came back in the
second to tie it at 11's. Showkiller then returned the favor with his
own Callahan to make it 12-11. The Knights, though, weren't done
with Penn State Scott scoring to force Universe Point. The Pawns then
received the disc, setting up a Nathan to Showkiller huck to end all
doubts. Final 13-12, Pawns.

A Finals

#1 Kings White (6-2) vs. #2 Bishops Grey (6-2)

Grey came out ready to rock, but ran into problems with the perfect
zone weather. In a standard 3-3-1 Z, White effectively shut down the
huck. And though we all give K-swiss a hard time about the amount of
time he puts the disc up, his team was crippled without that deadly
weapon. TK, on the other hand, made his squirrely handler cuts and
shredded the Grey D. Seriously Grey: how many of your wins were
against Royal? 4? 5? Anyway, the issue was never in doubt. A little
anti-climatic, but whatever. The best team won. Final: 15-6, Big bad
slamma jamma Kings.

B Finals

#5 Pawns YYY (5-4) vs #6 Queens (3-6)

With the B Finals set it would appear on paper that this should be a
great game. However, with all things said it seemed like the Pawns
were content just making it to the finals. Yeah there were your usual
plays Showkiller slide tackled someone a few nice D's from Nathan, but
the Queens were red hot. Crimson opened up with a nice drive that
went from Travis to Henry to Pretty Boy for the score. The Pawns came
out flat which allowed the 7-4 half score. Second half was much of
the same- Travis handling and just picking and choosing his
targets. Go ahead- select a name, any name, and you're definitely
right. Final 13-9, the Pretty Pretty Red Little Queens.

Congrats to Ted's team for shutting down Switzer's team. It was a
great season with the usual controversies showing up: "You were out,
No I was in, Your foot was on the line" Someone in the background
"It's their call back off." The joys of league.

Thanks to everyone for making it a great league see ya in Summer
League.
